6.2 Extension of the Base

Instead of employing additional dental rests the denture base is often centrally extended to aid in indirect retention so that elements of the base itself are located further from the saddle than the clasp arms. This is definitely effective as indirect retention (Fig. 53 a), but under functional loading of the saddle(s), the extended denture base has the same disadvantages as were described for dental rests placed distant from the saddle.
