6.4 Saddle-open Clasp
![]() 55 By saddle-open clasp we mean any clasp whose opening (the space between retentive arm and reciprocal arm or dental rest) faces the denture saddle. A saddle-open clasp also serves to increase indirect retention. Its mode of action is best explained by using the case of lone molars remaining in the lower arch. If an E-clasp with mesial rest and arms pointing distally were employed, this would be regarded as a saddle-closed clasp. When lifting forces are encountered in the anterior region of the arch the partial denture will rotate around the mesial rest and the clasp arms will be displaced in a gingival direction away from the height of contour (Fig. 55a + b). 6.3. Tooth-supported Saddle

54
When a third edentulous space is present, in addition to the bilateral edentulous areas posterior to the remaining teeth (Kennedy Class I, Mod. I), the tooth-supported saddle serves as an indirect retainer (Fig. 54). (more…)

6.2 Extension of the Base

53b

53a
Instead of employing additional dental rests the denture base is often centrally extended to aid in indirect retention so that elements of the base itself are located further from the saddle than the clasp arms. This is definitely effective as indirect retention (Fig. 53 a), but under functional loading of the saddle(s), the extended denture base has the same disadvantages as were described for dental rests placed distant from the saddle. That is, the extended portion is vertically lifted from the arch (Fig. 53 b). (more…)

6.1 Dental Support Distant from the Saddle
![]() 49 Especially in the presence of a free-end saddle, in particular for a Kennedy Class I, the lifting forces exerted by sticky foodstuffs have a detrimental effect. Special attention must be given to indirect retention in such cases. Care must be taken to insure that a lifting of the free- end saddle results in movement of the clasp arm toward the height of contour. That will occur when the dental rest is placed slightly further from the saddle than the tip of the retentive arm of the clasp (Fig. 49). (more…) |
